Game crash - Seems resolved by driver roll-back.

Post by Darcey » Thu, 8. Feb 24, 08:53

Hi,

I've been holding on to X4 for a long time now and finally got the time to play it, bought the DLC and I was ok for about a day, now it's crashing all the time.

Crash details:
Can be anywhere, in travel mode, in station, many different locations. Crash is instant return to desktop with windows trying to find solution. There is no error message, it's just windows going x4 has crashed, searching for fix, the classic windows 10 im searching for a fix to your crashed application lie.

Hardware:
i9 9900k
RTX 4090
64GB Ram
Scarlett 8i6 gen 3
NVME x 1, SSD x 4, HD x 1
1000w PSU

Software:
Windows 10 pro (latest updates installed)

Drivers:
Nvidia 4090 game ready drivers (drivers only install, not their software you have to login to, used DDU)

Game graphics settings:
Not set to ultra as I pref smoother gameplay. I also tried 2 of the anti-aliasting modes, it didn't fix anything.

FYI
This machine has and is put at high load often with work for many hours (3 day 24 x 7 was biggest job it did and had no issues), it has no problems maxing out system cpu, gpu, ram or gpu ram for hours on end.

Additional:
1. While trying to fix the crash I fixed other various issues in event viewer,
- Fixed windows BITS service issues (didn't fix game)
- Other stuff was DCOM (and are not relevant)

2. Steam game files integrity scan success (didn't fix game)

3. Started new game (didn't fix game)

4. Ran SFC /scannow & DISM - No joy

5. Found some google results stating xbox game bar stuff could cause problems, so done regedit fix for that and disabled it as background app, and made sure no settings were enabled etc. Didn't do the powershell usual of removing windows installed protected apps. Didn't fix. Note has to be re-applied if sfc / dism are run.

6. Set x4.exe to run as administrator, fired up the game, got a bit better of a run from it, 10 mins or so and plonk, looking at windows again. However event log now gave me a report of:

Faulting application name: X4.exe, version: 6.20.0.0, time stamp: 0x64e5fe3f
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.19041.3636, time stamp: 0x9b64aa6f

Faulting package-relative application ID:

Task Category: (100)

No other errors logged at same time in system or application logs at the time of crash.

7. Clutching at straws now...
Found game dump files opened in code editor in hex mode, sifted through what I could read, looks like it's just a dump of software, hardware, drivers, then stuff my brain can't decode, nothing in english that would point me in the right direction.

EGOSoft got any ideas?

Anyone else got any ideas?

Link the DxDiag and dumpfiles as advised how in the sticky at the top of this forum and hopefully a dev will take a look. There have been other reports of X4 random crashing with RTX 4090 and latest drivers though.

Yes, those look like the problem drivers. Try rolling back to older drivers as specified in the thread Alan linked above.

DDU uninstalled nvidia driver 551.23 and installed 546.29

Game has been running no crashes just fine...

Thanks for the tip.
