Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

I think that's a difficult question to produce a single definitive answer to. Certainly there are a relatively small number of attacks actually targeting desktop Linux due to the small install base, so it's safer in that sense. But Windows provides a lot of security features , many of which don't cu...

Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

Granted, But was not really relevant for the desktop user. ? It affected desktop installs of any Red Hat like (CentOS, Fedora, Scientific Linux, etc). Not granted because didn't allow control of what happened on the attacked side. Though systemd itself is still debated. Can you debate any windows c...

Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

No, you are: you're asserting that because you're not aware of a full remote compromise of a Linux desktop, one is not possible because the OS is inherently more secure. But that's nonsense. Firstly, I already linked two examples of Linux desktop (and server!) remote compromises from recent years, b...

Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

Mostly you're confusing the level of interest in targeting a given OS with the actual security of said OS. Android has over three billion active devices - of course there's an enormous amount of interest in compromising it! Desktop Linux has an install base of millions of devices at best, so by comp...

Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

You seem to have much better textbooks than I do, so for my benefit please list some of those security features that are present in a modern supercomputer Linux distro and a modern version of Android. Google still provide the setuid sandbox to support kernels which don't support user namespaces, yes...

Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

Chrome hasn't used the setuid sandbox since the kernel introduced suitable sandboxing mechanisms in 3.10 (2013). It uses user namespaces and seccomp-bpf. Firefox uses the same mechanism. You could try providing some actual citations or examples for Android being less secure than "any Linux/Unix", ra...

Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

[Android] lacks many of the security features that make up Linux. This is actively backwards - Android has a much stricter permissions model for applications than Linux does. Other than your web browser, I'd be shocked if any of the applications you run with your user permissions are constrained by...

But I imagine the module won't be present on all motherboards, although it's worth a check on exogenesis's?
This isn't the missing TPM issue (on its own) - the processor is not supported regardless of TPM status.

You should still be able to activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7 key - Microsoft have never turned the free upgrade path off.

Re: New PC

I wouldn't buy anything less than a 27" 1440p at this point. My partner uses a Dell S2721DS, which is great for the money and within your budget. (Other monitors exist.) Your 1050 might struggle a bit with the higher resolution on some games, but you can always turn it down if it's too much of a pro...

Re: Why aren't we all using fuel-cells at home to generate our own power & heating needs ?

No form of methane derived hydrogen production is ever going to be a long-term solution for energy production, because it's still using fossil fuels so it's still CO2 intensive. In the short term, methane might be better than other fossil fuels, whether you burn it directly or turn it into hydrogen....

Re: Why aren't we all using fuel-cells at home to generate our own power & heating needs ?

Couple of big reasons: 1) Hydrogen as a fuel is just really annoying. It's hard to store, hard to transport, hard to produce. 2) What are you actually gaining by introducing the hydrogen step into this process, or by moving it to consumer properties? Methane + energy -> hydrogen + CO2 -> transport h...

Re: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced

Pillars of eternity 1 and 2 (also customised 3.5 rules based from the 3.5 ruleset from WoTC This isn't true. PoE uses its own rules system which is real time, unlike the turn-based D&D system - each action has a length of time it takes to perform the action and a cooldown, and each character's acti...

Re: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trYZFE0eh5k RTwP, it did use the D&D rules, yes, but it wasn't turned based. D&D rules are turn based. KotOR pretends to be real time - it lets you queue actions up for multiple future turns and doesn't pause on the beginning of your turn (by default - you can turn t...

Re: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced

The original game was real time, I can't remember if it had a pause, but it certainly wasn't turn based. The thing is, are they going to totally throw away the old script? I liked the fact you played as the bad guy all along, and depending on your choices, you could return to the light, or go back ...

Re: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced

But on the other hand, there is cause for concern, recent games, including the mass effect games, have seen their fair share of censorship, and stuff changing. If nothing changes, then OK, but the list of games getting stuff removed, even mild stuff like a shot of a woman's behind (one of the mass ...

Re: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced

Aparently some roaring feminist has been hired to re-write KOTOR. Get ready for a lot of green titty milk monster scenes, not to mention there is a loads of great female characters to ruin too. They'll most probably swap Bastila, Kreia and many other for bland Rey-like clones. Why, for the love of ...

Re: Linux for gaming, is this a good time to jump the windows boat?

Linux gaming is in a better state than it's ever been with all the work Valve have put into Proton for the Steam Deck, but you will still trip over things that flake out a bit, so I don't want to promise a 100% trouble-free experience. If you ask ten Linux users for a distribution recommendation you...

Re: New PC

I use a 34" 1440p curved ultrawide (specifically, this one: https://www.lg.com/hk_en/monitor/lg-34GN850-B) which is phenomenal, but failing that a 27" 1440p is what I'd pick as well. And yes, any built-in speakers on a monitor are going to be atrocious.

Re: Random News not worthy of own thread

Onto something totally different. Apple is going to be actively searching for child pornography on Iphone and Ipads, they have software they have designed to look at any picture that is stored on the iCloud, comparing their hash to a register of known child pornography images. Am I the only one who...
